This interesting film from director Christian Petzold tells the story of a man who tries to flee France after a Nazi invasion. He assumes the identity of a dead author along the way and has to stop in Marseilles. It is here he meets a woman he starts to fall in love with. However this woman turns out to be Marie, the wife of the dead author. The plot device used here is a way for Petzold to get to themes that challenge the viewer. The time the story takes place in is ambiguous which makes it relatable to the constant political struggle various people have been going through, modern times included. Lead actor Franz Rogowski conveys multiple emotions as the story twists it’s way to a daunting finale. It is refreshing to see complex characters inside a complex story. This is a film that draws you in and makes you think.
