Film has the ability to reflect our lives and social issues back at us and even be a catalyst for change. Documentary film is especially suited for this task. Instead of being constrained by narrative fiction, the best docs show us the world as it is, warts and all, and force us to consider truths and “rally the troops” around a cause. These are still storytellers telling stories, with beginning-middle-end structure, character arcs, comedy, and tragedy. They just happen to also be real. The very best docs are impactful, and profoundly affect those who watch them. and this week on CinemJaw we choose our Top 5.
Joining us is perhaps the best possible guest for this topic. Gordon Quinn has been making documentaries for over 45 years and is Artistic Director and founding member of Kartemquin Films. His credits include the films Hoop Dreams, Vietnam, Long Time Coming, 5 Girls, Refrigerator Mothers, and Stevie (among many others). It’s always an honor to meet every guest, but very so often, it is truly an extra special honor to be with a particular guest. Meeting Gordon was a real treat, we hope you enjoy our discussion with this legendary voice in documentary film.
So how’s that for impactful?
Please grab your note pads, as you may want to jot down a few of these picks. You know… document them.
