I’m gonna git you sucka!
This week on CinemaJaw we pull on our ski masks and suit up to take the movie law into our own hands as we cover Vigilante Movies! Closely related to (but ultimately separate from) the Revenge genre, Vigilante films are about a character or group of characters who decide to dish out their own brand of justice and it seems to be a dish best served with a knuckle sandwich on the side, this is some great violent stuff!
Have no fear, CinemaJaw is not one to be a Lone Ranger in these matters. We brought along some Southern vigilantism from Matt and Francesca Scalici of the hit Birmingham blog and popular podcast series, FilmNerds.com! Not only are Matt and Francesca amazing film critics in their own right as individuals, they also throw down family style with the highly interesting “ride home from the theater” film couples podcast: Cinematrimony. In fact they have a great podcast and reviews blog network going on, and we highly encourage you to check it out. Or else we will be looking for you.

A long time ago. In a galaxy far far away…
In what is sure to be a trilogy of Special Episodes (read: 6 part), we once again return to that galaxy far far away and take a look at our beloved Star Wars. It bears repeating, after all this year marks the 35th anniversary of Episode 4 A New Hope, the first of what would be come a long lasting cultural phenomenon. Star Wars has touched so many of our lives. Whether you were on board from Luke’s igloo on Tattoinee or grew up eating Jar Jar cereal doesn’t really matter, there is one common thread that connects us, it surrounds us and penetrates us, it binds the galaxy together. That thread is the love of Luke, Leia, Han and Chewy. The love of Star Wars.
Joining us once again aboard the Millennium Falcon of CinemaJaw is Star Wars expert, and Documentary Filmmaker Cris Macht. (Interestingly Chris shares a birthday, May 25, with Star Wars and his last name, literally translated from German means Power, or… FORCE). You may remember Cris from our first Star Wars Special way back in episode 27. At that time he was touting his first film The Force Among Us. This time Cris is fresh off a successful Kickstarter campaign for his latest look at lightsaber lust, albeit a much more personal and emotional look, The Force Within Us. Chris is our co-pilot for the whole episode as we delve into the depths of this Sarlacc Pit.
All our greatest bits are covered. I for an I, CinemaWAR and a whole lot more. So enjoy this amazing episode of CinemaJaw, and May The Force Be With You!

Now officially into triple digits, CinemaJaw pauses this Valentines Day to reflect on love, romance, candy and stuff like that… You know, stuff like Prison Movies! What sweeter way to celebrate the holiday of Love than a day late and with a discussion of prison? We couldn’t think of one. We needed a cellmate in this stint in the clink, luckily James VanOsdol was on Skype with us playing the fresh fish.
You may know James from his work on Q101, his many WGN Television appearances, his ChicagoNow blog, or as the latest addition to the pioneering Steve Dahl Podcast Network. This guy is a prolific personality, and we had a great convo on media, prison films, and life in general. Thanks to James for being on the Jaw!
James joins us for the whole episode as we cover our top 5, I for an I, Movie Reviews, Guest vs. Host Trivia, Hollywood Headlines, CinemaWAR and a whole lot more! So escape from the prison of reality with a mp3 file baked into a cake: CinemaJaw!

Fee Fi Fo Fum…
There is a shadow that lurks in the corners of your mind. It lingers just beyond cracked open doors waiting to strike. It is the deep and primal fear of being devoured by MONSTERS! We all learn to deal with these feelings at an early age, yet somehow they never fully go away. Some people deal with it by writing stories, about the boogie men, the towering beasts, the drooling creatures. Some deal with it by watching these stories play out on the silver screen!
The tradition of monster movies goes way back to the birth of Hollywood. King Kong, Godzilla, Dinosaurs, etc. and into it’s Golden Age with the Universal Monsters: Fank, Drac, Mum, etc. This tradition continues to this very day with some fantastic modern entries into the genre. Matt and Ry knew that if they were traverse these fish-man infested waters they would need help…
Enter Todd Milano and Jason Deeble Programmer and Artist (respectively) of daily monster themed web comic Monster-Haiku.com. With the help of Jason and Todd this monster squad will tackle the Best Monster Movies of All Time! Just in time for Halloween! Yay!

No that’s not a typo. That is how he spells his name.
Summer is ending, and that got the folks at CinemaJaw thinking about all the great times we have had at the beach this season. Not to mention all the great beach movies there are out there. So we waxed up our surfboards for one last wave this season, the Best Beach Movies. Our intrepid hosts do, after all, need some people to spot them, so they invited John Otterbacher and Justen Naughton to join the panel and act as lifeguards on this expedition.
John and Justen are the Producer and Writer/Director (respectively) of a great new film about to hit DVD, that our own Matt K has called “the Clerks of Lifeguard Movies.” RIFFRAFF is a coming-of-age comedy about lifeguards on Chicago’s North Avenue Beach over the course of a summer. The film stars Robert Belushi and Ben Wells, and is the debut feature of writer/director Justen Naughton. Chryssie Whitehead and Katie O’Hagan co-star, and the film was produced by John Otterbacher and David J. Miller. So who better to chime in on Best Beach Movies than this pair? Plus you will get Justen and John on I for an I, CinemaWAR, Guest v. Host Trivia and a whole lot of laughs!
It should also be noted that Matt K and Ry the Movie Guy will be hosting the DVD release party of RIFFRAFF at the Original Mothers (26 W Division, Chicago) on Sept 8th at 7pm. So mark your calendars and bring your autograph books… because that Belushi kid just might be there. It is FREE to get into this event for anyone 21 and older. Please join us!
So slather on that coco butter, and double knot those bikini tops, because just when you thought it was safe to go back into the water: CinemaJaws hit the beach!
